With the start of a new year, goal setting is high on everyone’s minds. It is a new beginning and as such a perfect time to start changing your life. I just hope that as you think about the coming year, as you set those goals that you want to achieve, to accomplish, that you do so from a place of gratitude.

So often, when we create New Year’s resolutions we think about all the things we wish we had. We wish we would lose weight, we wish for the willpower to stop a bad habit, we wish for more money, etc. We focus on what we lack.

This year, I want to challenge you to focus on what you do have. Focus on what you have accomplished in the last year and then seek how you can deepen your life. Think about the past year and what you experienced.

Think about the mistakes you made this past year and forgive yourself. You are human. And being human is a beautiful thing. You are amazing. Focus on the things that you have learned from those mistakes. And feel the accomplishment that comes from learning.

Think about your strengths. They are there. You do have strengths and an amazing capacity to use them to strengthen others. Believe in that capacity and believe in yourself. Set goals on how to use those strengths more.

Think about the good moments and set goals on how you can have more of those moments.

Think about the difficult times and see how much you have been through, you survived them. You made it through. You are capable of making it through whatever may come next.

Dieter Uchtdorf said, “Being grateful in times of distress does not mean that we are pleased with our circumstances. It does mean that through the eyes of faith we look beyond our present-day challenges.”

Look beyond with those eyes of faith and remember that you are loved. God loves you. He sees so much potential in you. He loves you enough that He sent His son, Jesus Christ to come to this earth and make it possible for you to return to live with Him again. He wants you to succeed. And He will help you to do just that. Trust in Him as you think about this next year. Trust that He will guide you. And then listen.

Be thankful. Be thankful for that love that Heavenly Father has for you. Be thankful that eternal life is possible. Be thankful that Christ makes up for the mistakes that you may have made, and that you may make. Be thankful that we can learn from our experiences. Be thankful that we can grow, because when we grow, then we can look back and see just how far we’ve come. We see just how much we can accomplish.

Remember these things and then more forward with love and understanding. Create your goals from a place of abundance, with confidence that whatever may happen, you will learn something, you will be loved, and you will accomplish.
